Hi, Friend!

"Security is found in our nearness to God and not in our distance from danger," wrote Nickarter "Boy" Gonzalo. A few weeks ago, he was shot in the back three times outside his home. Boy had been a peace advocate and respected Christian leader and writer in Basilan, an island hotbed for religious extremist rebels in the southern Philippines. You can read more about Boy's faith in the Inside MAI Blog.

MAI is privileged to partner with many courageous Christians in the world's hard, violent places. We invite you to pray with us for their safety and protection, and the creation of life-giving Christian literature. Download the MAI Prayer Guide.

Buenos Aires: Words and images that speak to the soul

The cobblestone streets, historic cafes and tango bars of San Telmo, Buenos Aires, Argentina, have been home to generations of dancers, puppeteers, painters and poets. A local church here hosted a four-day workshop for Christian editors and designers. The July training was led by Argentine editors Silvia Chaves and Adriana Powell; literary consultant John Eames of the U.S.; Colombian illustrator Catalina Echeverri; and designers Pablo Ortelli from Argentina and Michael Collie from Australia.

Ghana: Behind every good book

“Behind every effective author and every good book is a good editor,” says award-winning author and publisher Lawrence Darmani of Step Publishers. He welcomed 46 men and women to MAI's editorial workshop in Accra, Ghana, in August.

Editors the Missing Link in Local Christian Publishing

Why aren’t there more books by local Christian writers in various regions of the world? Answered simply: the lack of skilled, proactive editors.

"We need editors who will walk side-by-side with struggling writers to help them produce their works," notes MAI trainer Lawrence Darmani of Ghana.

MAI is ramping up efforts to equip Christian editors in Africa, Asia and Latin America, as evidenced by our recent workshops in Argentina and Ghana. The MAI-Asia Publishing Forum this November in Hong Kong will feature a training track just for editors.

"Publishers need to understand the key role their editors can play in acquiring manuscripts, nurturing authors and shaping a manuscript to its full potential," says editor and MAI-Asia chair Bernice Lee of Singapore.

We are also about to publish a revised, updated version of the Spanish-language editor training manual, Edite con éxito (Successful Editing), originally published by Cook.

MAI longs to see more quality, life-changing literature by local authors. Equipping editors is one of the best ways to make it happen.
