Inside MAI Blog: Thoughts on global publishing

Buy a book, help a writer

Buy a book, help a writer. That’s what happens when you purchase A Novel Idea (Tyndale, 2009).

This “how-to” book on inspirational fiction resulted from a late-night brainstorming session by authors Robin Gunn and Angela Elwell Hunt. They were thinking up ways to help international Christian writers and wondered: What if members of ChiLibris, a group of Christian novelists, contributed chapters for a book of best advice on writing inspirational fiction, with all royalties going to MAI to help fledgling Christian writers?

This "novel idea" became a reality, and earlier this year MAI received a first royalty check from Tyndale. Over dinner at the ICRS convention in St. Louis, I shared the good news with Robin and Angela that MAI began putting that first check to work by sponsoring five writers for our recent writer workshop in Uganda.

Workshop coordinator Lillian Tindyebwa said, “We feel the deep need to extend our sincere thanks to you and MAI and the wonderful writers who surrendered their royalties towards facilitating the June 2010 Workshop.”

From that same royalty check, we also provided scholarship funds for next month’s Christian writer training in Malaysia. At least five church leaders will be sponsored for that workshop as well.

Workshop organizer Hwee Yong said, “This will be the first time for some of them to seriously sit down and hatch something for the Lord. We look forward to some books for their congregations written by their own pastors.

“We trust that some very good books will result from this workshop and that a writing culture will be sparked among Bahasa-speaking brethren. Some of the choicest writers will be at the workshop.”

We hope this is just the beginning of what royalties from sales of A Novel Idea will do. Thank you, Robin and Angie. Thank you,Tyndale and contributing writers from ChiLibris.

If you’ve been waiting to write that first novel, or even if you just want to help an international Christian writer, I hope you’ll get a copy of this well-crafted book.
